Department 53 - Steers

Beef.

Youth who are planning to Exhibit Beef at the Columbiana County Junior Fair MUST meet the following requirements to Exhibit:
  1. Be a youth in good standing in the Youth Organization they are a member. Meet all requirements to have a completed project with the Youth Organization. (4-H- Audrey Dimmerling Dimmerling.13@osu.edu, FFA – refer to FFA Advisor, Grange- refer to Advisor, Boy/Girl Scout- refer to Club Leader, etc) Each youth organization may have their own requirements.
  2. Declare your Junior Fair Exhibition Project by March 1st. (4-H Members register projects in 4-H online 2.0; FFA Members register projects through their advisor; all others need to contact the Jr Fair Directors) The OSU Extension office will run a report from 4-H online 2.0 to give to the Jr Fair Directors)
  3. Attend one (1) Quality Assurance Training
  4. Attend one (1) Clinic offered/approved by the Junior Fair Committees (Carcass must also attend an additional clinic)
  5. Register and Tag in by December 31, 2022
  6. Attend Book Grading
  7. Skillathon 

Registration.

Please upload the photo of your steer with the Ear Tag in place no later than Dec. 31, 2022. The tag can be placed in either ear. If the exhibitor has a backup or Carcass steer, please upload that as steer #2. If doing a family backup, just enter under 1 child.

Book Grading & Skillathon

There are two options for beef skillathon and book grading, as well as two different types of skillathon: traditional kit and paper packet.  Both options will test the SAME information; however, exhibitors can pick the option they are more comfortable with completing.

Carcass Registration.

Below is the link to register to bring a carcass steer. Must have registered when entered steer registration.  20 carcass steers is the max. In event more than that, the spots will go to the more senior members with the most showing years. The Exhibitor must be showing a live steer at the fair for at least 2 years to be eligible for carcass steer. The carcass steer must be hauled to Damascus Livestock Auction Barn on July 23 from 3-4pm, and then hauled to KIKO meats from 4-5pm.  Results will be July 28 at 5pm. and the exhibitor needs to be present for the results to win. Only the grand and reserve carcass steer will sell during the livestock auction at the fair. All other carcass projects will need to have their own buyers, and those buyers need to have cutting orders turned into Kiko Meats by August 1st.

2023 Premium Book.

Premium Policy.

All premium moneys will be paid out as follows:
 
  • Jr. Fair: Sunday (the last day of fair) in Coliseum Office from   2:00 p.m.– 6:00 p.m.
  • Open Class: Sunday (the last day of fair) in Fair Administration Office from 2:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
  • Open Class Arts and Crafts: in Arts and Crafts Building during exhibit pick-up times
 
Any premium monies not picked up during the above designated times will be available Monday through Friday (the week after the fair) in Fair Administration Building from 9:00 a.m.-12 p.m. (noon).
 
All Premium money will be issued in checks.
Please cash checks ASAP; checks are void after 90 days
 
***No checks will be mailed
 
All checks not cashed within the 90-day time period will be considered a donation by the payee to the Columbiana County Fair.
